Services
The Aims of the Project are:
- To provide a befriending and signposting service to Asian women who experience stress, isolation and depression.
- To provide a professional and person-centered service.
- To be sensitive to the lifestyles and cultural values of Asian women in Britain today.
- To facilitate, monitor and deliver a 'drop in service' among others with a view to reducing isolation.
- o provide outreach and home visits if the user is unable to visit the Sahil office.
The Objectives
of Sahil Project are:
- Benefit of Asian women in the area of benefit
- The relief of need, hardship and poverty
- The advancement of education
- The preservation and protection of health and
- The provision or assistance in the provision of facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and other leisure time occupation with the object of improving their conditions of life.
Accessing Sahil
Sahil provides a first point of contact for women, offering information, support and guidance on whatever query they may have. We can then enable the women to contact other relevant services to meet their needs - we signpost women.
All our services are delivered in a professional and culturally sensitive manner and great emphasis is out onto the fact that our services are free and confidential.
- To provide a befriending service for Asian women with mental health problems
- To provide impartial and non-judgemental advice and guidance
- To escort women to appropriate helping agencies
- To provide a drop in service
- To provide an outreach and home visiting service to women who can not attend the project.
Over the week we run a number of services, which include, welfare advice, employment advice, signposting, drop-in, befriending, counselling, speaking on behalf, support groups, self help support groups. Organise events such as women’s international week, open days, health and social events, trips, confidence building training sessions. We also offer number of other activities to alleviate stress i.e. yoga session and complimentary therapies.
Befriending
There are 14 Volunteers to befriend Asian Women, either at the office or in their own homes. A Volunteer Co-ordinator, manages the volunteers. The volunteer Befriender provides emotional support, listens to client problems, and helps the women to work through difficult issues. They can provide a listening ear when the women need to express anxieties or concerns. The Befrienders speak five Asian languages, including, Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Gujrati.
Drop In Sessions
These sessions are very popular with women who come in and access support on form filling, letter reading, making appointments and befriending.
Service User Support Sessions
During these sessions a variety of subjects is covered including, personal safety, stress management, healthy eating, domestic violence awareness, and women’s health related topics. The aims of the group are to try to reduce isolation and stress and encourage women to meet and share their experiences with others in similar circumstances.
Counselling
The counselling service provides one to one support for women to ensure they gain maximum emotional support in times of crisis. The service is delivered via Qualified Counsellors.
